Neckpiece: Sea-Edge, 2024

‘Sea-edge’ n the margin of the sea. - A Scots Dictionary of Nature, Amanda Thomson.

This necklace has been made to be worn by the Sea-edge. The seaweeds used in crafting this jewellery are gathered frugally, only when they have been washed ashore by wave actions so that there is never a need to disturb the live ecology. In the workshop, the seaweed is dried and worked on using a jeweller's toolbox. No preservatives, treatments or glue are used in the process. If you wish, this neckpiece may be returned to the sea or earth. It could even be buried as an effective fertiliser.

Care

Knotted wrack seaweed (ascophyllum nodosum), is both strong and resilient, yet fragile and delicate. Therefore, it must be worn, handled and displayed with care to ensure its longevity.

For your seaweed artwork to last many years, please follow these care instructions. Your artwork is free from any preservatives, treatments, or glues, and it retains all of the natural properties of seaweed. Please be cautious to keep your artwork away from damp environments and water, as seaweed is hydrophilic and will absorb moisture from its surroundings. Always store your seaweed in a dry, well ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and significant temperature fluctuations.

Note that prolonged, direct contact with skin may cause the artwork to absorb body oils. Please avoid any contact with cosmetics, toiletries, and sun cream. If you notice your piece has been affected by moisture, ensure that it is allowed to dry out.
