Sculpture: Februar, 2024

'Februar' is the Scots' word for February. During this month, winter storms and big tides often bring large quantities of seaweed ashore. The strandline, which is the line of debris left on the beach by the high tide, is particularly abundant during this time and is often the furthest inland it will appear all year. This is the time of year when those who use seaweed as a fertiliser on coastal croft land may prefer to gather and spread seaweed in their soil. The highest high tides come with the lowest low tides, and as the coast is battered by winter storms, this is also the preferred month for gathering seaweed as material for my artwork. At this time, when there is an abundance of seaweed cast ashore, one can gather what they need from the large pile of seaweed while leaving behind plenty for local invertebrates and grazing seabirds.

Please note that commissions are subject to availability, and the lead time is typically between three and six weeks, depending on the scale of the project.

  • Knotted wrack seaweed (ascophyllum nodosum), is both strong and resilient, yet fragile and delicate. Therefore, it must be worn, handled and displayed with care to ensure its longevity.

For your seaweed artwork to last many years, please follow these care instructions. Your artwork is free from any preservatives, treatments, or glues, and it retains all of the natural properties of seaweed. Please be cautious to keep your artwork away from damp environments and water, as seaweed is hydrophilic and will absorb moisture from its surroundings. Always store your seaweed in a dry, well ventilated place, away from direct sunlight and significant temperature fluctuations.

Note that prolonged, direct contact with skin may cause the artwork to absorb body oils. Please avoid any contact with cosmetics, toiletries, and sun cream. If you notice your piece has been affected by moisture, ensure that it is allowed to dry out.

Sunlight and time will gradually alter the colour of the artwork, fading from greens to soft browns and muted yellows. I encourage you to embrace this natural transformation.

To clean your piece, delicately dust or wipe with a dry cloth.

If you wish, you may return this artwork to the earth where it can be buried to serve as an effective fertiliser, enriching and nourishing the plants that grow there.

  • The commission process will determine the most suitable delivery method, whether it be via post, collection, or drop off. Delivery costs are subject to location, but most mainland UK delivery costs are covered within the commission price.
